Cage The Elephant is known for tossing a cover or two into their sets, but their version of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” from at an event honoring him was particularly a crowd pleaser.
Speaking to Forbes about their new album, Social Cues, Matt Shultz shared a story about meeting the late singer at the 2017 MusiCares tribute show.
Gushing to Petty backstage, the frontman admitted, “Tom, I feel like we would have been friends in high school,” then added, “Man, I have to thank you for helping me to write songs. I feel like I learned a lot from listening to your music.”
Taking the compliments in, Petty replied, “Gotta write the hits, man.”
