The 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is facing a backlash from fans who claim the once-rocking show has sold out by featuring more pop acts.
Among the tweets criticizing the festival, one fan compares 1999’s lineup, which included Rage Against the Machine, Perry Ferrell and Morrissey, to this year’s Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino and Khalid.
The lineups are accompanied by the caption, “Are rock and metal dead in the desert?” Backing the complaints, AltPress.com points out that over the past 20 years, the festival’s representation of rock acts has fallen from 35 percent to 13 percent. And of that 13 percent, only two — Weezer and the 1975 — are headliners.
Do you agree with the complaints? Or do you think the change is just part of a natural evolution of musical tastes?
