Yeast Found In 1886 Shipwreck Turned Into Beer
Beer lovers are finally able to try a recreated brew that dates back two centuries thanks to a find off the coast of Long Island, New York.
Saint James Brewery owner Jamie Adams, a diving enthusiast, discovered the SS Oregon on the ocean floor near Fire Island. Sending a team of divers down, they retrieved bottles of beer with the corks in tact from the shipwreck.
Adams spent two years extracting the yeast and getting the taste just right to create his new Deep Ascent ale, which he debuted at a craft beer festival last weekend.
Saying it has a slightly fruity taste with a hoppy finish, Adams feels his beer is a “replication of what would have been served on that ship in 1886.”
What kinds of beer do you like? What’s the wildest type you tried?
